Panchkula: Acting on complaints from motorists, Panchkula police will withdraw all special police officers (SPOs) and home guards from the traffic wing, commissioner Pankaj Nain announced Tuesday.
The decision follows a review of enforcement practices and conduct of personnel after feedback from commuters travelling through the city from neighbouring states. All SPOs and home guards currently on traffic duty will be shifted to other assignments.
The police will now prioritise action against serious violations linked to road safety, including drInk driving, triple riding, vehicles without number plates and use of illegal black films.
The commissioner said the aim is to reduce harassment of genuine motorists while tightening action on risky violations.
Issuing a stern warning, Nain said any misconduct by personnel during vehicle checks—such as misbehaviour, abuse of authority or demand for bribes — would invite strict action.
Citizens can report complaints on helpline number 9115777026. “Transparency, accountability and respectful treatment of citizens are key to effective policing,” Nain said, adding that complainants’ identity would remain confidential.
