Supreme Court gets two more judges with MP roots
Bhopal: Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh high court Sanjeev Sachdeva and Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana high court Sheel Nagu are among the five judges appointed to the Supreme Court by President Droupadi Murmu on the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium. Both judges share a strong association with Madhya Pradesh, having served in the MP high court before their elevation to the apex court.
Justice Sachdeva was transferred from the Delhi high court to the Madhya Pradesh HC in May 2024. During his tenure, he served twice as acting Chief Justice of the MP high court -- in 2024 and 2025 -- before being appointed Chief Justice on July 17, 2025.
Justice Nagu began his legal career after enrolling with the Madhya Pradesh State Bar Council in 1987. He was elevated as an additional judge of the MP high court in May 2011 and became a permanent judge in May 2013. He also served as acting Chief Justice of the MP high court in 2024 before being appointed Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana high court.
With the appointment of five new judges, the strength of the Supreme Court will increase to 37 against the sanctioned strength of 38 judges.
The latest elevations further bolster Madhya Pradesh’s representation in the apex court. Of the 37 judges who will now serve in the Supreme Court, five either belong to the state or have had a long association with the MP high court as judges or lawyers. They are Justices JK Maheshwari, Alok Aradhe, Satish Chandra Sharma, Sheel Nagu and Sanjeev Sachdeva.
