Bhopal: Adding to a disturbing trail of such incidents in Madhya Pradesh and elsewhere across the country, a head constable was injured after a suspected illegal miner allegedly tried to run him over during a check of his sand-laden tractor at Kamthi village in Balaghat late Tuesday night.
A case was registered against three individuals identified as Akash Tekam, Surjit Tekam and Devisingh Kumre, in connection with the incident, the police said, adding that one of them was arrested while the other two were being questioned.
The injured officer, head constable Rajeshwar Rahangdale, was acting on information about illegal sand transportation in the area. He had reached the spot with Sunil Vishwakarma, a fellow constable, for verification.
Police said a tractor, loaded with sand, allegedly hit the head constable during the operation. Videos from the spot purportedly showed the vehicle carrying sand.
Rahangdale was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Gondia. Speaking to TOI, IGP, Balaghat Range, Lalit Shakyawar said, “The head constable is stable and the matter is under investigation.”
Meanwhile, broadly hinting at rampant illegal sand mining in the area, officials from the minerals department said there are no authorised sand ghats in Kamthi.
Local reports, too, alleged that sand was allegedly being transported from the Garapuri stream.
