At oath ceremony, spotlight on Shivakumar’s designer wear and Tihar beard

Bengaluru: When DK Shivakumar takes oath as chief minister Wednesday, attention will be as much on those he inducts into his council of ministers as on two other personal choices: What he will wear for the historic occasion, and whether he will finally shave off the beard he vowed to keep until becoming CM.Known as one of the most fashion-conscious politicians in the country, Shivakumar has built a distinctive public image through his carefully curated wardrobe. From crisp white kurtas and silk dhotis to tailored bandhgalas, designer scarves and luxury accessories, his sartorial choices have become an integral part of his political brand. While other politicians have opted for at least an appearance of austerity, Shivakumar has been unafraid to flaunt designer wear.Sources say Shivakumar is likely to opt for a traditional Karnataka-inspired outfit for the swearing-in ceremony, possibly a pristine white kurta and dhoti ensemble, complemented by one of his trademark scarves or stoles. While he frequently experiments with colours and designer labels, major political milestones have often seen him return to classic white attire associated with simplicity, discipline and Congress party tradition.
Over the years, Shivakumar has openly embraced premium international brands including Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Burberry and Chanel. Scarves and stoles remain among his favourite accessories, and his collection of luxury watches and designer sunglasses has long fascinated observers. It has reinforced his image as one who is comfortable blending politics with personal style. His clothing choices are rarely accidental. Associates say family members and close friends often help him select outfits depending on the occasion — whether a political rally, cultural programme, official meeting or overseas visit. A distinctive feature of his wardrobe is the customised ‘DK’ monogram embroidered on select shirts and kurtas, adding a personal signature to his attire. His fondness for luxury fashion has occasionally sparked political controversy. Opposition members have criticised some of his designer accessories, including a scarf that reportedly carried a price tag running into tens of thousands of rupees. BJP functionaries once dubbed him ‘Costly Kumar’, while rivals questioned the display of luxury amid economic challenges faced by ordinary citizens. Shivakumar has consistently defended his choices, arguing that personal success should not be viewed negatively.Yet, the bigger question ahead of Wednesday’s ceremony concerns his beard. After his 2019 incarceration in Tihar Jail in connection with a money laundering case, Shivakumar had reportedly resolved not to shave until he became CM. Many have suggested the look is becoming of him, but the question remains: Will he get rid of it now?
