Ahmedabad: Mahavirsinh Sindhav, 35, a history-sheeter whose name figured in several criminal cases and investigations, died after falling from the fourth floor of a residential complex in Bopal on Monday night while allegedly trying to flee police intervention following a disturbance in the society.
Police said Sindhav, originally from Chokdi village in Surendranagar district, recently moved to a flat in Akshar Luxuria in Bopal. According to police, he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and got into a heated argument with residents of another block in the complex. The confrontation escalated into a scuffle, prompting residents to call the emergency helpline 112.
Ahmedabad Rural SP Omprakash Jat said that when a police team reached the apartment complex in response to the call, Sindhav allegedly switched off the electricity supply. As a result, the police personnel were briefly stuck in the lift. Amid the commotion, Sindhav attempted to escape and fell from the fourth floor. He sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot.
Bopal police registered a case of accidental death and started further investigation. The body was sent to Sola Civil Hospital for postmortem examination before being handed over to family members for last rites in his native village.
Sindhav came into the public spotlight in 2020 after making a high-profile appearance at a folk music event featuring performers Rajbha Gadhvi and Devayat Khavad in Morbi district. Videos showing him arriving with a convoy of luxury vehicles and showering currency notes on stage had gone viral on social media.
Sindhav had earlier served as a supply soldier in the Indian Army before getting entangled in multiple criminal cases. Police had earlier linked him to a Surendranagar-based drug network after three men were caught with narcotics worth Rs 17.81 lakh from an apartment in 2023. During the probe, police found that the flat had allegedly been arranged through Sindhav.
The police had also cited suspected links between Sindhav and associates of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, though no court ruling had confirmed such a connection. In another case registered in 2023, he was accused of carrying out a daylight robbery at gunpoint in Chokdi village and was later arrested.
Police said further inquiries are under way into the circumstances surrounding Monday night’s incident.
