Four migrant workers burned alive in Italy; two Pakistanis arrested

Italian authorities have arrested two Pakistani nationals over the alleged murder of four migrant farm workers who were burned alive inside a minivan in the southern region of Calabria.The victims – three Afghans and one Pakistani – were found inside a charred vehicle at a petrol station in Amendolara, near Cosenza, after firefighters extinguished a blaze on Tuesday afternoon. Investigators say surveillance footage captured the attack, showing two men pouring flammable liquid into the van, setting it alight and blocking the doors to prevent those inside from escaping.A fifth man, a 35-year-old Afghan farm worker, survived by breaking out through the rear of the vehicle. Speaking to Italian media, he said the group had been returning from work in Calabria's strawberry fields when a dispute broke out over money. He alleged that the workers had not been paid for their labour and had received only food and accommodation.Prosecutors have charged the two suspects with aggravated murder. The survivor also alleged that the attackers were linked to criminal networks involved in controlling migrant labour in the area.The case has once again drawn attention to Italy's long-standing problem of labour exploitation in agriculture, often linked to the illegal gangmaster system known as caporalato. Under the system, vulnerable migrant workers are recruited and controlled by intermediaries who profit from low wages and poor working conditions.The killings prompted outrage across Italy. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni vowed that all those responsible would be brought to justice, saying the country would not retreat in the face of "violence and barbarity". Calabria regional president Roberto Occhiuto described the attack as a chilling tragedy that raised profound questions about migration, human dignity and society's responsibility towards its most vulnerable people.Italy's largest trade union, CGIL, called the murders an "unspeakable horror" and urged authorities to tackle the abuse routinely faced by migrant workers in the countryside.
