6 best period dramas to watch on OTT

There’s just something magical about period dramas. Maybe it’s the way they drop you smack in the middle of another era — where you’re wandering through candlelit ballrooms, stomping across muddy battlefields, or getting lost in the echo of grand palaces. These shows don’t just look good; they build entire worlds you want to stay in for hours. The costumes turn heads, the sets feel like you could reach out and touch them, and every little detail sucks you in until you forget you’re just watching TV. In the mood for a quick escape? Or maybe you’re ready for a weekend-long binge. Either way, these dramas have you covered.

If you want big feelings, plots with more twists than a corkscrew, royal secrets, and characters you’ll actually miss when it’s over, period dramas on streaming platforms have it all. You’ll find everything from legendary fantasy kingdoms to real-life dynasties and samurai tales. Honestly, you’re spoiled for choice. Here’s my take on the best period dramas streaming now — and where to find them.

2/7

‘Bridgerton’

First comes romance! ‘Bridgerton’ takes you to Regency-era London, packed with gossip, glamour, and plenty of forbidden love. The central family of the show, the Bridgerton family, deals with scandal, society’s rules, and all the drama that comes with it while simultaneously chasing romance. The costumes dazzle, the banter’s sharp, and the chemistry is real. Good luck watching just one episode.

Where to watch: ‘Bridgerton’ is streaming on Netflix. And if you’re hooked on Regency romance, mark your calendar — next season’s out on January 29, 2026.

3/7

‘The Crown’

If you want to get into the nitty-gritty of modern royal history, ‘The Crown’ delivers. It follows Queen Elizabeth II’s life, showing the personal and political storms she faces. The show blends politics and family drama so well that you’ll forget you’re watching actors. The performances are stellar, the sets are gorgeous, and the emotion hits hard. You’ll keep watching just to see how it all plays out.

Where to watch: Netflix is home to this critically acclaimed series.

4/7

‘Game of Thrones’

‘Game of Thrones’ wasn’t just a show. It was a phenomenon. Imagine the vast landscapes of Westeros and Essos, and all the noble houses are constantly scheming, betraying, and fighting for the one bona fide Iron Throne. You get wars, magic, dragons, and political moves that’ll have you guessing who’s left standing. The twists hit hard, the characters stick with you, and the production is on another level. This show changed TV forever. Once you hit play, it’s almost impossible to stop.

Where to watch: You can stream ‘Game of Thrones’ on HBO and HBO Max. In India, you can check it out on JioHotstar.

5/7

‘House of the Dragon’

Still can’t get enough of Westeros? ‘House of the Dragon’ is your next stop. This prequel jumps back to the days of House Targaryen and the notorious Dance of the Dragons — a brutal civil war for the throne. There are more dragons, higher stakes, and plenty of betrayal to go around. Expect epic battles and family drama that’s just as juicy as the original. Perfect for watching episode after episode.

Where to watch: Stream ‘House of the Dragon’ on HBO, HBO Max, and JioHotstar.

6/7

‘Shōgun’

‘Shōgun’ brings a change in scenery — it’s set in 17th-century Japan. For John Blackthorne (an English sailor), who washes ashore, ends up in Japan, the land of Samurai and honor codes. ‘Shōgun’ is adapted from the book by James Clavell. This period piece depicts how two cultures clash with each other, and illustrates the political intrigues and power plays that keep you interested. The story is wonderfully told, the country is very realistic, and the characters hold your attention until the end of the film.

Where to watch: You can watch it on Disney+. In India, it’s available on JioHotstar.

7/7

‘The Last Kingdom’

If you’re looking for fierce battles and unforgettable characters, ‘The Last Kingdom’ is your jam. It’s based on the novels of Bernard Cornwell that feature Uhtred, who is a warrior finding himself caught between the Saxons and the Vikings of 9th-century England. While Uhtred is loyal to his home, he is torn at times over his loyalties and consequently does not always know who to trust. In addition, the action is full of intense battles, and the characters have well-developed arcs throughout all 4 seasons of the show. Safe to say, it’s a great choice for a serious binge.

Where to watch: Stream ‘The Last Kingdom’ on Netflix.
