In a significant development for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), senior party leader Firhad Hakim has resigned as Mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), a position he had held since November 2018. The announcement was made by TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, who said Hakim had requested party chief Mamata Banerjee to allow him to step down. According to Ghosh, Hakim felt the state government was rendering the corporation ineffective and sought a dignified exit. He added that Banerjee had initially not granted permission but later approved the resignation following an administrative meeting at Nabanna. Popularly known as Bobby, Hakim is considered a close aide of Mamata Banerjee and is a four-time MLA representing the Kolkata Port Assembly constituency.
