CA|TS is a set of criteria that checks the management of tiger conservation. Developed by tiger and protected area experts, this global recognition was officially launched in 2013. The main objective of the organisation is to set minimum standards for effective management of target species, along with encouraging assessment of these standards in relevant conservation regions.
In India, tiger conservation became a major activity under Project Tiger in 1973 after banning tiger hunting in 1970. Back in 1972, the country conducted a tiger census and found that there were 1827 tigers in the country. In the same year, the Wildlife Protection Act was also introduced in India.
As per the 2018 tiger census, there are an estimated 2967 tigers present in the country, of which 2461 tigers have been photographed through camera traps. The selected tiger reserves are also a part of the tourism circuit of the states they belong to.
