Bern is known for its sublime gardens and the University Botanical Garden is the best place in the city to get acquainted with diverse flora. It has been around since 1860 and has as many as 5000 plant species from all over the world. There are endangered names from North America, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Asia and, of course, Europe, notably Switzerland. The danger that looms over them helps visitors understand the importance of plants in their lives. The garden has three elaborate greenhouses that illustrate vegetation from the tropics and sub-tropics. The Fern House is replete with palm ferns from the tropical mountains, the Palm House has sugarcane, bananas and coffee while the third showcase is about plants from semi-deserts.
