Located between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, Istanbul is Turkey’s economic, cultural and historical centre. It is the only city in the world that straddles two continents, i.e., Europe and Asia, and is referred to as Eurasia. The Bosphorus Strait clearly demarks the diversity of the two continents. Founded as a Byzantium in 600 BC, it transformed into Constantinople in 300 BC before turning into Istanbul. The Constantinople served as an imperial capital for over 1500 years. It was one of the important trading posts on the ancient silk route. The strategic location of Istanbul attracted many crusaders and it served as a seat of power for three dominating empires of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. The glorious history has left the city with architectural treasures spanning over 3000 years. The vibrant past relives in the maze of modern day Istanbul. In its cradle, you can find the best of both the continents, from colourful bazaars, historical neighbourhoods and myriad of minarets to lively nightlife and gastronomical adventures. The melting pot of cultures, Istanbul attracts thousands of tourists from world over.
