Magical landscapes straight out of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are dotted all around New Zealand, and most of these scenic spots are close to major landmarks and tourist centres. Set out on a safari adventure taking in some of the most iconic film locations, join an organised tour, or embark on a self-guided exploration. The Hobbiton movie set portraying the peaceful Shire is set in Matamata near Hamilton and Auckland, and is a marvel to behold. Further south, the Tongariro Crossing will transport you to Mordor, retracing Frodo’s steps. The capital city of Wellington is where production crews brought the films to life, while nearby regions doubled as Rivendell, Hobbiton Woods and the Gardens of Isengard.
