A ride on the wild side
Word to the wise: Each piece of luggage after the first will carry a surplus charge, as will any journey taken after 10pm, when the higher rate 2 applies.
This isn't a city in which you should just hail down a cab - they're chronically unreliable, with wild drivers to boot. It is best to get a number from the hotel, restaurant or cashier, who will know the more trustworthy companies. That is unless you're travelling from the Termini, in which case make sure to wait in the official taxi line, and not be lured outside it by unofficial taxis offering cheap fares.
Official taxis are white with a taxi sign, though no fixed prices are really applied. There are two brackets of price: rate 1 and rate 2, which is used at night. Make sure the meter is on, and there is a small '1' next to the price if you're travelling during the day. The driver's name and registration number should be on the inside of the left rear door.
