Hiking and trekking through nature – with a number of volcanoes, and tropical and cloud forests, the two coasts are a natural habitat for trails to hike and trek. The trails range from very easy to treacherous. Fascinating miradores on the way, with rewards like waterfalls and lakes make it the number one outdoor sport in Costa Rica. The most popular trails can be found at the Reserva Santa Elena, Reserva Biologica Nuboso Monteverde, Parque Nacional Corcovado, and Cerro Chirripo. Now for a word of caution – wildlife is pretty diverse and active, so be aware of encountering one. Do not harm or challenge them, for the sake of your own safety. There are poisonous vines and berries in the forests, so don't pluck and gorge on any of them, no matter how inviting they may seem. Sturdy shoes, rain wear, mosquito repellants, water and food, and safety whistle are a non-compromising must. Hiking in groups, with a guide or at least one companion is strongly advised if you are planning a long distance hike. Avoid going off the trail. You may not necessarily have to book yourself with a tour, as the trails in Costa Rica are well maintained, and well-marked. As long as you follow the rules, it is bound to be a great trek or hike.
