One of the most unique shopping experiences in Bern is at the Onion Market (Zibelemärit) which is essentially a folk festival that is celebrated on the fourth Monday of the month of November. Swiss farmers throng to the capital in order to sell tonnes of onions and garlic in the form of decorative braids, mementos, yummy tarts, quiches, breads and heart-warming soups. The celebrations begin as early as dawn when travellers and locals assemble at Bern’s Old Town and relish the oniony goodies along with mugs of mulled wine. The aroma of caramelised onions and browned garlic wafts through the air, casting a spell on the visitors and keeping them warm while the cold winds blow in all their glory.
