Basic guidelines on the code of conduct
Abu Dhabi welcomes over a million tourists each year, and most enjoy their stay without incident. Still, the laws are more conservative than in many Western countries, and the odd foreigner has been jailed or deported for flouting the local customs. It's useful to know what is and isn’t permissible in the city and below are some activities best avoided:

1. While it is acceptable for married couples to hold hands, for the most part, public displays of affection are frowned upon, and are illegal in some cases. Tourists have been jailed for kissing in public places.

2. Incurring debt and bouncing cheques are both jailable offenses. As a result, it’s important to always have cash on hand to cover your bills.

3. The UAE has a zero tolerance law when it comes to drug possession, and perpetrators face a minimum of four years jail time, even for carrying trace amounts. Some over the counter and prescription drugs are considered controlled substances. To be on the safe side, visitors travelling with prescription drugs should travel with a doctor’s note, and contact the UAE Ministry of Health before setting off.
