Janmashtami is the day that celebrates the birth of Hindu deity Krishna. His birthday is the time when the community from across the globe comes together and immerses itself in Krishna bhajans, songs and raas leelas. From all the places, the Janmashtami celebration in Mathura is the most unique, memorable, and the very best, for Mathura is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna.
Mathura, being the birthplace of Krishna, celebrates Janmashtami in the grandest way possible. Each and every household and person in Mathura can be seen in their best attires, ready to celebrate the day of their favourite Bal Gopala (Krishna’s another name).
Dahi Handi tradition
We all know the stories of little mischievous Krishna, wherein he would steal butter, milk and curd. Dahi Handi tradition celebrates the same love of Krishna for these products. People start practising for the ritual well in advance. In Dahi Handi, an earthen pot full of dahi is hanged on top, tied to a wire usually, and huge human pyramids are formed, wherein people climb on each other to reach the top and smash the pot.
This ceremony is basically an enactment of Krishna’s childhood. The stories of Krishna stealing butter and milk from people’s houses along with his friends are very famous. The entire act of Dahi Handi is not just symbolic but is also fun and entertaining to watch; the custom is followed and celebrated across the country.
To sum it up, Janmashtami celebrations in Mathura cannot be missed; a once in a lifetime experience!
