A water sports center tucked away in a remote corner, along the banks of the Sharavathy backwaters, closer to the Linganamakki dam, Honnemardu has attracted thousands of adventure enthusiasts over the years. Established in the 1990’s, by The Adventurers—A Wilderness School, Honnemardu offers a basic water sports (coracling, canoeing, kayaking) and camping experience. The approach is through Talaguppa on the Sagar Kargal/Jog road. Its back to the basics here, food is simple &vegetarian, stay is rough (mostly in tents and dorms), but the setting is pretty and serene. Typically, a day starts with some basic swimming drills followed by canoeing. And in the evening, teams head out to Korigudda. An island is located about 1.5 km away to camp for the night in tents. A small hillock which is a part of the campus offers a splendid view of the sunset, as the sun paints the sky orange, the sight of the vast backwaters is breathtaking. For a better view, you may climb to Bheemanahejje gudda if you are up for a bit of a walk. Honnemardu is not for the vacationer. It’s a rugged outdoor experience. They strictly prohibit smoking & alcohol on campus. Over the years, the quality of equipment, especially the life jackets, the boats etc has drastically deteriorated raising some safety concerns. Nevertheless, it remains a popular hub for adventure tourists.
