This is a weekend trek where one can relish the company of the rhododendrons, which run across the whole valley providing a blanket of brilliantly lit manifold hues dotting the landscape of this region. The availability of a trekker’s hut at the top of the valley at an altitude of 2438 m is a boon to the trekkers. The trek starts from Viswema Village, about 25 km from Kohima and goes through an 8 km motorable road. After that, the trail winds upwards on the right through a flight of large number of stones to the top. The whole valley is visible and another 5 km walk along the valley takes one to the trekker’s hut. There are two meandering rivers known as Dzukou and Jafpu that flow across these valleys and provide ample prospects to idle away time. Another trail route through Zakhma also goes to this valley but it’s steeper than the one from Viswema Village. Dzukou Valley lies on the border of Nagaland and Manipur and offers an occasional sighting of Blyth’s tragopan, which is the state bird of Nagaland. The best time to do this trek is from June to September.
