Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco isn’t just a shop—it is a journey. As you travel through Peru, you will realise that weaving textiles is intrinsic to the Andean way of life. The patterns on each of these structures tell stories about the Peruvian way of life. They also differ from community to community, so they function as markers of identity of indigenous groups in the area. Of course, traditional artisans who use old methods of weaving are becoming harder to find with each passing day. Unfortunately, mass-manufactured synthetic yarns, coloured with bright dyes, are to blame for this. Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco aims to reinstate traditional Peruvian weaves by introducing tourists to the rich history of weaving from fur, wool, other kinds of yarn in Peru. A visit here is essential if you don’t intend to go to traditional weaving workshops in the countryside of Peru. You can see lots of artisans hard at work here. The exhibits provide lots of information about weaving techniques and trends in Peru. They will also give you a good idea of what you need to look for while purchasing Peruvian clothes and accessories. But a visit to Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco isn’t purely educational. The in-house shop sells authentic Peruvian goods crafted by artisans around the country.
