Located near Panchmarhi town, Jatashankar is a sacred cave inside a beautiful gorge. It is believed that Shiva came here from the Mahadeo range to escape the demon Bhasmasur. There is a natural ‘lingam’ on the cave floor, which resembles the god’s deadlocks. This cave is also a prominent stop on the Shivratri Mela. While visiting Jatashankara, don’t forget to check out Harper’s Cave in the Nimbu Bhuj rock shelter nearby. This cave gets its name from an ancient painting of a man playing a harp-like musical instrument, while three women and a child dance before him. The shelter also has other intriguing paintings done in red and white.
