Word to the wise: If you want some history on your shopping trip visit Jenners - an enormous department store which has been a fixture on Princes Street since 1838.
Princes Street, in the heart of the New Town, has been the city’s foremost shopping strip for more than two centuries. This enormous retail boulevard is home to pretty much every high street giant from H&M and Topshop to M&S and Gap.
It isn't strong on independent local flavour, but it does have some of the best views of Edinburgh Castle available, which certainly compensates. For a touch of culture between consumer binges head to the Scottish National Gallery, or you can slip away into pretty Princes Street Gardens if it all gets too much.
