Elegant and friendly neighbourhood centred around a picturesque pondTalk of the town: For years local residents have been entrenched in bitter protests with developers who want to demolish some of the area's older buildings and build new luxury housing in their place.
The pretty streets around Patriarch’s Ponds have a friendly and well-off neighbourhood vibe to them, with narrow backstreets filled with hip restaurants and cafes, quirky little boutiques and private art galleries.
The pristine Patriarch's pond at the heart of the neighbourhood is a favourite place for locals to take a spring stroll, relax with a book, or go skating in the winter. Russian bookworms will recognise it as the location for the opening scenes of Mikhail Bulgakov’s masterpiece 'Master and Margarita'. Bulgakov himself lived in the area, as did other popular Russian writers Anton Chekov and Maxim Gorky.
