See a show on Sweden's national stage for opera and ballet

Talk of the town: Legend has it that the ghost of the assassinated King Gustaf III returns each year on March 16, the anniversary of his death.
This beautiful baroque building, opened in 1898, is the birthplace of Swedish opera, hosting 350 performances during each season (from late August to late June).

King Gustaf III, a lover of music and art, built the first opera house on this foundation in 1782. Today, the stunning main stage has three tiers and seats more than 1,000 people. Many Stockholmers are arts enthusiasts, but it's a casual affair (people come in jeans) and it's not uncommon to see children at a performance. This just goes to show that you don't have to know the difference between Wagner and Bellini, or your arabesques from your fouettés, to appreciate an evening of entertainment from world-class performers.
