On the east side of the river along Charoen Rat Road there are a row of bars and restaurants right on the waterfront that are popular with locals and travellers alike for gathering with friends, throwing back a few bottles of beer and enjoying live music. One of these is The Goodview, a large restaurant serving typical Thai food, table service drinks and featuring nightly live bands―if you come later in the evening the atmosphere will change from simply a restaurant to having a more club-like atmosphere. Come with a group to eat and drink the Thai way―order several dishes to share family-style and nibble on throughout the night along with a bottle of whiskey and mixers to mix your own drinks. This isn’t a place you’d normally pop into for just a quick drink, but to stay awhile. It’s also not great if you want to sit down and have a long conversation―the music’s too loud and the energy too high! If for some reason you’re itching for a different scene, you can simply start walking down the street and walk into the next place that suits your fancy, including an upscale wine bar and one of Chiang Mai’s most famous restaurants, The Riverside Bar and Restaurant.
