Whether on the pavements, round street corners, in parks and spilling out from various establishments, it is rather difficult to escape music in New Orleans. Jazz in New Orleans is sort of a religion. Similar genres like blues, soul, funk, and R&B are also prevalent. By far, Bourbon Street in the French Quarter is famous for its dives, but it is more a four-block area of Frenchmen Street in the Marigny area, which is where all the music is at. Read less

Whether on the pavements, round street corners, in parks and spilling out from various establishments, it is rather difficult to escape music in New Orleans. Jazz in New Orleans is sort of a religion. Similar genres like blues, soul, funk, and R&B are also prevalent. By far, Bourbon Street in the French Quarter is famous for its dives, but it is more a four-block area of Frenchmen Street in the Marigny area, which is where all the music is at. They sit cheek by jowl and offer some of the biggest names in the field, such as Kermit Ruffins and Irvin Mayfield. But even far away in the Treme, Carrolltown, and the 7th ward neighbourhoods, there are little places where music rules and everything else is secondary. And there are places like The Jazz Playhouse, located within a contemporary luxury hotel, and boasting a retro but plush setting, and yet wildly popular because of the line up. Sure, some of these places also serve up some fabulous cocktails and authentic Creole dishes among others, but it’s the music which is king. Here’s a checklist of places that might enhance your jazz experience of New Orleans.
