Stunning 600-year-old hospital turned cultural centre

Talk of the town: Antoni Gaudí died in this hospital in 1926 after being hit by a tram on his way to work on La Sagrada Familia, just five minutes walk away.
Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau is a dazzling 15th-century hospital with a 20th century face-lift; six medieval hospitals merged in 1401 to form this massive complex and a new building was constructed in the early 1900s to meet modern demands.

Architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner was responsible for the glorious design, known for its pavilions and greenery that were thought to improve the health of its patients. Over the years the hospital has become the most significant public building representing Catalan modernism and in 1997 was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The hospital's daily operations have been moved into a new building in the northeast corner of the complex, and the older buildings have been shuttered to prepare for its conversion into a museum and cultural centre.
