Newer than the Vieux Carre but no less filled with attractions
Talk of the town: Freret Street between Napoleon and Jefferson has become one of the city's latest hotspots for interesting shops and restaurants.
The Garden District, nearer the CBD, takes its name from the substantial plots of land on which these mansions once stood before being subdivided to house New Orleans' booming population. The area roughly bounded by Jackson, Louisiana, Saint Charles and Magazine boasts many beautiful examples of antebellum Greek Revival and Italianate architecture, creole villas, and double gallery houses heavy with 'gingerbread' ornamentation.
The Irish Channel to the south is known predominantly for Parasol's and Tracey's, two Irish pubs that between them throw an almighty Third Street block party on St Patrick's Day (March 17).
