Ramshackle historical area full of hidden gemsNoteworthy for: The Kitay Gorod area dates back to medieval times and parts of the old city walls can still be glimpsed close to the river.
Word to the wise: Try to avoid taking taxis in this area as most streets are one-way only and traffic jams are notorious.

The underground artistic set are still the region’s most active presence, and practically all of Moscow’s most enduring underground nightclubs and live music venues are located here, as well as numerous craft shops and quaint cafes.
Hot nightlife spots to look out for include Propoganda, Kriziz Zhanra and the hipster magnet Solyanka. For coffee try Lyudi kak Lyudi, or the 'pay by-the-minute' cafe Tsiferblat. If you like sifting through old junk it's worth seeking out Retro Magazinchik, which has an especially good collection of antique jewellery and accessories.
