Word to the wise: In an age where travellers have come to expect complimentary Wi-Fi at good hotels, it's a little disappointing that the Intercontinental continues to charge extortionately high rates for the service.

Mumbai is awash with international hotel chains, some so large they have the potential to feel a little impersonal. With just 57 well-appointed rooms, the Intercontinental Marine Drive is practically boutique - and it couldn't be better located.
Boasting unobstructed views across Back Bay to Malabar Hill, it's worth splashing out on a sea-view room here - or at least make the most of the rooftop pool terrace and the sleek Dome Bar. Dining in is a treat, with top Mumbai restaurants Koh by Ian Kittichai (Thai) Corleoné (Mediterranean) and Kebab Korner (North Indian) all located in-house.

On cooler nights, you can still get a great view of the Queen's Necklace through the huge bay windows in the Rouge Bar as you settle in with an after dinner drink. Somehow they've managed to squeeze a small fitness centre into the building too, but spa treatments are conducted in-room.
