Jashan means celebration in Hindi, and one visit to this Indian fine dining destination in Central will convince you of the aptness of its name. After undergoing a complete makeover in 2011, the restaurant re-opened with a spunkier identity, and has maintained its standard ever since. The new interiors exude a colonial vibe—decked in hues of mahogany and red, with wooden floors, golden lamps and comfortable leather upholstery—and the re-invented menu puts a contemporary spin on traditional flavours. But the reason Jashan stands out amidst its contemporaries, is the variety of food it offers—while most Indian restaurants in the city offer predominantly north Indian staples, Jashan will regale you with regional flavours from all corners of the Indian subcontinent. If you’re willing to experiment, try their Bombay tawa chicken, mirchi kebab (chicken marinated in coriander and chillies served with a tangy chutney), lamb vindaloo and nilgiri mackarel (fish medallions cooked with fennel seeds in coconut gravy). For traditionalists, an order of galouti kebab, butter chicken and palak paneer will not disappoint—although the presentation is quirky, the flavours are a hundred percent spot on. End with the mango, roasted coconut and saffron ice cream—you’ll definitely want seconds.
