When you want to eat the best sushi and seafood in the city—and that says a lot given that you’re on an island—Ronin is the unanimous winner. Hidden along a nondescript lane, this izakaya-style bar and restaurant has an unassuming air about it—with its grey façade, lack of signage and laidback vibe—and is a sharp contrast to its sister restaurant, Yardbird, which is owned and run by the same people. If you’re a chicken eater, don’t bother going—the menu unapologetically concentrates on fresh fish and seafood, and pairs each offering with a glass from their extensive selection of spirits which includes a mammoth collection of Japanese whiskies. The restaurant is modest and only seats up to a dozen diners at a time, while the bar accommodates up to 14 people, which is ideal if you go in a big group—you’ll feel like you own the place. Don’t miss the sashimi and the baby squid, and definitely down a few shots of the infused shochu, which comes in several different flavours.
