New Yen Yen is to Asian grocery shopping what Friends was to sitcom junkies: an incredible experience jam packed into too few seasons, except in this case it’s space, which is at a premium in the city. That hasn’t thwarted the enterprising owners, who have loaded the shelves with every imaginable item you could ever need. Frozen marbled meats at eye-poppingly cheap prices (just don’t expect a certificate), a gargantuan array of noodles, rice, sauces, pre-made curry pastes and powders, dim sum, fish cakes, and popular Asian snacks (think Pocky chocolate covered biscuit sticks et al) to even pre-packed herbal tea concoctions, and vacuum-packed chicken’s feet and duck necks. Don’t worry about searching for a liquor store for the tipple to accompany your impending Asian feast, because New Yen Yen also conveniently stocks a good array of Chinese, Japanese and Korean rice wines, sochu and sake. And if you’re out of the city, fear not, because there are outposts at Eastwood (Shop 6, 25 Lakeside Road, phone: 612-9804 0988) and Top Ryde City Shopping Centre (Corner of Devlin Street and Blaxland Road Ryde, phone: +612-9807 1932) to ensure you never run into an Asian food crisis.
