Are you looking for a surreal dining experience? Then head to “Under” in Norway. The aptly titled restaurant is located in Norway’s southern tip, Spangereid. What’s so special about this place? It is set up five and a half metres semi-submerged.
The name “Under” is also a wordplay, as it means “wonder” in Norwegian.
34 metres in length, the restaurant is built as a rock formation, and blends marine life to present an amorous experience. In fact, its rough concrete shell is set to act like an artificial reef. Designed by Norwegian architects Snoehetta, the restaurant will allow diners to view sea-life while enjoying their food. There is a big window that has been laid out to expose diners to marine life; it is really like a large aquarium.
The food here in Under is being led by head chef Nicolai Ellitsgaard, and is certainly fine dining. The products used for cooking your dishes have been procured from surrounding waters and farms, and you can try set menus, such as the “immersion” menu.
The experience is really dramatic for diners, as you sit on the wooden chairs and tables to enjoy a delicious, yet surreal meal.
