The crater of Volcan Poas has a beautiful lake at its centre. This is the easiest day trip that you can take from the city of San Jose. The cars are parked right at the top. From the parking it is an easy walk that takes you till the mouth of the Volcano at the edge of the crater. Most of the times, clouds shroud the mouth of the crater, and the lake becomes invisible. Just hang around a while, walking till the winds clear the cloud. It is a beautiful sight as you look down from the top. The water is blue with almost no vegetation around it. This is one of the balding volcanoes with just rock and barren all over because the lava that spewed damaged everything in sight. It is not advisable to go too close hence the area to reach right up to the crater has been cordoned off. There are sulfuric emissions, tiny geysers, and almost invisible lava that stays below, observed if you carry a pair of binoculars.
