The carvings lead us to wonder what the people of that time thought about sex and bodily pleasures. Records state that these caves are one of the major attractions in India after Taj Mahal. And the temples strikingly reflect Indo-Aryan medieval temple architecture and art, in which the sculptures are based on classical traditions. The build of the temples will further give you an impression that they were fashioned and built during an age of extreme tolerance, when people used to have an integrated outlook on life.
Another popular belief has it that during that time, Buddhism was prevalent, which was viewed as diverting people from worldly pleasures; thus, the sculptures were the result of fear and an effort to save Hinduism at that time.
The next time when you visit these temples, know that these walls reflect a bigger story and prove how tolerant India truly is.
