When the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme was announced by the Modi government, it came across as a welcome move for travellers, especially for those who can’t afford flights every time. Shillong will soon be the latest addition to the UDAN scheme, as flights under this scheme will be made operational from there by an Indian low-cost carrier starting December 15, 2017.

With Shillong as the centre for connectivity, the UDAN flights by Air Deccan will connect from there to other northeast destinations. There will also be flights between Kolkata and Agartala under this scheme.
The reason why Shillong has been selected is because it is the centre for regional connectivity and due to this reason the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has provided refuelling facilities at the airport. Although a leading oil company (Oil India Ltd) has already completed setting up its refuelling facility near the airport, another one is also reportedly coming up soon.

Since Shillong is often the starting point of many trips to Meghalaya, including those to the popular destinations like Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong, the upcoming flights under the UDAN scheme will make travelling a lot more easier in this part of the country for tourists from different parts of the country and the world at large. Presently, there’s just one flight that connects Kolkata to Shillong.
