Thailand is paying travellers to explore the offbeat side of the country

The Thai government is paying people to wander within the country in a move to improve domestic tourism. And as per records, Bangkok was named as the most visited city in 2018, which was the third year in a row. Yet, Thailand thinks, it’s not enough. Why?

Well, if we go by reports, it might seem like Thailand does not even require publicity to promote tourism as it is already registering a record number of tourist footfall. In reality, only a handful of sites, such as Bangkok and Phuket, are attracting more than 30 million tourists every year. Therefore, the Thai Government will be launching this initiative of paying people to visit other areas of the country in a bid to motivate people to visit them.
As per the latest news reports, for this campaign, Thailand has set aside a budget of 15 million bhat (around INR 3 crore). Details of how one can participate in this campaign will be released later, but the catch about this campaign is that only Thai citizens aged 18 or above can take part in this. Participants will be getting an allowance of 1500 bhat (INR 3215), which they can spend in any of the 55 cities that are listed in the campaign.
An official in the know-how informed that the Thai government is planning to launch this innovative campaign before July this year. As per the campaign, the government will deposit the amount into the account of the participant via an e-payment system, which they are expected to use during the trip and make cashless purchases.
