Stradun or Placa, as it’s often called, is the main street that runs in the east-west direction in Dubrovnik’s old town. Once you enter Pile gate from the west and walk through the inner gates, you are on Stradun, which stretches all the way to Ploče gate on the eastern side. What is now a limestone paved street running through the old town used to be a marshy channel that separated the then Dubrovnik town from the forests. Today, it’s the main promenade which is always bustling with tourists who stroll down the street enjoying the most prominent monuments and historic buildings in Dubrovnik. It’s the main business street of the city and for that reason you’ll find plenty of shops and restaurants along Stradun. It’s also a popular venue for public feasts and processions and celebrations, which also include New Years’ Eve fireworks. It’s impossible to visit Dubrovnik and not go for a gander along the Stradun. Once you’re tired, just sit at one of the cafés and enjoy a cuppa as the world goes by in front of you.
