Sikar is a big district town that was established in the early 18th Century. This was a powerful thikana of the Thakurs in earlier times. This Mahal is Sikar’s crown jewel. Said to be built in 1845, there are beautiful sections inside the mahal. There is a Sheesh Mahal full of mirrors, Makrana Mahal made of white marble, and the Chini Mahal with murals painted in blue and white. Badal Mahal, on the other hand is the fourth section.
The Biyani Haveli here at Sikar is well-preserved with colourful frescoes, and the Krishna Satsang Bhavan is a high ceiling hall with coloured glasses and paintings of Krishna. The Shiva Temple has beautiful paintings, and was originally a chhatri of the rulers of Sikar. Also worth visiting are Jain Temple, Gopinath Temple and Raghunath Temple. They are all old establishments and some paintings of great historic value can be seen. There is also a 10th Century Harash Temple in Sikar maintained by ASI.
Although there are many havelis of note in Sikar, it may be difficult to find the caretaker to open the doors. Sikar is hardly visited by tourists, although it has some fine chhatris too. 10 km away from Sikar, is the tranquil sight of the beautiful fort of Deogarh built in the 18th Century.
Being a district place, budget accommodation is available in plenty in Sikar.
