There’s something magical about riding a motorbike in the mountains with the wind caressing your hair―it’s exhilarating and relaxing at the same time. One of the most convenient drives from Chiang Mai is known as the Samoeng Loop, which offers riders about a two hour drive through little villages and big mountain views on good roads. The road from Mae Rim heading to Samoeng then back around to the city of Chiang Mai is in good shape and doesn’t have many hairpin turns or extra steep spots, making it a relatively easy and enjoyable ride for beginners or experienced riders. Though you do need to watch out for elephants on the road! When doing the Samoeng Loop it’s all about the journey, not the destination that matters so sit back and enjoy the ride. From Chiang Mai head north toward Mae Rim on Route 107 then turn left onto Highway 1096. From here just follow the road until eventually, on the other side of the mountain you’ll come to a ‘T’ in the road and turn left toward Hang Dong. Now you’re getting back into civilization and a left turn at the first or second major intersections will direct you back into Chiang Mai’s city centre.
