Located on top of a hill in the centre, São Jorge Castle dominates the skyline of the old quarter of Lisbon. The castle was built during the 11th century on the site of earlier Roman fortification. The Moorish fortification has seen bloody crusades from Celtic, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, and Moors to Christians during its lifespan. It served as a royal residence of Portugal Monarch king Afonso Henriques from 12th century till 16th century. The Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the castle sparing the towering walls with 18 towers which can be seen from everywhere in Lisbon. Take a stroll around the medieval fortress and step back into the history of Lisbon. The ramparts of the São Jorge Castle contain the ruins from various rulers. The fortified citadel carries the history of centuries of struggle in its cradle. The archaeological site displays remains of previous empires. The most fascinating part of São Jorge Castle is its outer walls. Climb on top of the tower and walk over the walls. The camera obscura hidden inside the Torre de Ulísses offers a unique 360-degree angle on Lisbon. The elevation offers the most breathtaking view of Lisbon from every corner. The backdrop of red roofs and river Tagus are going to leave lasting memories of Lisbon!Refrain from posting comments that are obscene, defamatory or inflammatory, and do not indulge in personal attacks, name calling or inciting hatred against any community.
