Japan is not the land of rising sun, this country is

Most of the time, it’s a great feeling to be unique. Imagine being able to experience a place that witnesses the first light of day, every single day. No, we are not talking about Japan, the country that is nicknamed as the Land of the Rising Sun, we are here for Kiribati, the island country in the central Pacific Ocean.

Millennium Island, also known as Caroline Island, is the place that receives the first sunrise of the day, every single day, for the most part of the year. This is that special location where the dawn breaks before anywhere else on the planet. To see that sunrise must be an experience to remember. If it helps, Kiribati also has the earliest time zone on Earth.


This is the time when travel meets science, and we speak more from the travel point of view. However, we can try to present this in a simpler way. We know that there is actually no true sunrise or sunset. This is because the Earth is a sphere (sorry Flat-earthers) and is constantly rotating. There is a series of sunrises and sunsets throughout the day. But to make our lives easier, there is also something called the International Date Line. This imaginary line, running through the middle of the Pacific Ocean, in a way marks where one day ends and the next one starts. This line passes through somewhere around Kiribati’s Millennium Island, hence we have the 'first' sunrise.

Kiribati is made up of 33 atolls and reef islands, one of which is the uninhabited Millennium Island. For those fortunate enough to see this, the experience is nothing short of magical. However, it is also important to note that the Earth is constantly rotating. That and the slight tilt of Earth is why this distinction of the ‘first sunrise’ is never attributed to one particular spot on Earth.

We are definitely far away from the actual scientific explanation, but what we know is that experience such as this is going to be something one will remember for a really long time, and definitely something worth travelling for.
