The Kacheguda railway station in Hyderabad, Telangana, has been declared as the first energy-efficient railway station in the country, which now also falls under the A1 category. The station received the title when the South Central Railway (SCR) declared the railway station’s energy-efficient capabilities in early December this year.In fact, the Kacheguda railway station has even earned the distinction of becoming the first railway station in the country which has 100 percent energy efficiency. This happened when all 1,312 conventional lights of this station were replaced with new LED lights, while the 370 ceiling fans hanging throughout the station’s premises were replaced by Brushless DC Electrical (BLDC) motors energy-efficient fans. Also, 12 air-conditioners with energy efficient inverters were also installed within the station’s premises.

The new and improved energy efficiency of the Kacheguda railway station is not only beneficial for the environment, but also is expected to prove as a major way to reduce the costs incurred by the authorities. A statement by SCR has already stated that this initiative is expected to help the station save 1.76 lakh units of electricity, which converts to an amount of INR 14.08 lakhs. This will not only be beneficial for SCR, as these savings in electricity will reduce the overall load by 46.18 kW for the Indian Railways.
