A medieval town in western Switzerland’s Üechtland, Fribourg is home to a celebrated university and stands gracefully alongside Saane River. While it was once fortified way back in time; fragments of its brilliantly preserved ramparts can still be seen. Its Old Town is a proud possessor of some exclusive 15th century Gothic constructions and travellers from all over the globe throng to Fribourg to witness their beauty. The most striking sight in town, however, is the 13th century Cathedral of Freiburg with the most sublime stained glass windows you will ever see. Built in honour of St. Nicholas, it has a 75 m high tower that offers some arresting views of this educational and economic hub. Visit the ‘Espace Jean Tinguely et Niki de Saint Phalle’ if you are an art connoisseur and explore the Loreto Chapel for its Baroque beauty. There is also a puppet museum for all of the young travellers.
Fribourg is a 21 min train journey from Bern along the S-Bahn. Tickets should cost around 15 CHF and should be booked in advance if in case you do not have a Swiss Pass.
