Seeped in history, Kohima, the capital city of this state, situated at a distance of close to 74 km from the city of Dimapur, carries the sacrifice of thousands of soldiers in the Battle of Kohima which changed the course of the Second World War. Dimapur is the gateway to this state and regular trains from Guwahati and Kolkata are available to this city. Regular flights by Air India also operate between Kolkata, Guwahati and Dimapur. The hornbill festival celebrated in the month of December is a potpourri of different tribal cultures dominating the cultural landscape of this region culminating in a week-long carnival of music and dance.
