Daugavpils is a medieval city, founded by the Livonian Knights as part of a key trading route in 1275. Known for its iconic castle, the original fortress was destroyed and rebuilt many times, including once after an attack by Ivan the Terrible and during the great Northern War of 1720. The castle that now stands was built in 1864 and showcases an enormous amount of history. Read less

Daugavpils is a medieval city, founded by the Livonian Knights as part of a key trading route in 1275. Known for its iconic castle, the original fortress was destroyed and rebuilt many times, including once after an attack by Ivan the Terrible and during the great Northern War of 1720. The castle that now stands was built in 1864 and showcases an enormous amount of history. Besides, the city boasts many examples of the beautiful 19th century architecture. Check out the historical centre of the city to see over 80 cultural/historical objects in a variety of architectural styles such as the Latgale baroque. Other popular tourist attractions include the Local Arts and History Museum, Dubrovin Park, and Orthodox and Lutheran cemeteries.
