The first thing that visitors will notice when entering Old Town from the newer part is the Castle Square that lies at the end of the Royal Route. Almost entirely reconstructed, it is impressive and quite arresting. Ranged almost like a semicircle with Sigismund’s Column in the middle, the square is home to the Royal Castle, and the ruins of the fort can still be seen. In the 14th century, this was the most important place and gateway to the thriving town of Warsaw. Today, a host of restaurants, cafes and eateries abound on the opposite side of the castle, buzzing with energy—a great place to spend evenings.
