The biggest Buddhist sanctuary in the world, Borobudur temple was built in the IX century AD and is actually famous not for its size, but for its fine sculptures and unique design. The biggest Buddhist sanctuary in the world, Borobudur temple was built in the IX century AD and is actually famous not for its size, but for its fine sculptures and unique design. Located 40 km north-east of Yogyakarta, it was totally forgotten for long time, until it was brought back to light during British occupation and restored about a hundred years later.Borobudur temple is built on nine different levels covered in high reliefs representing the passage from earthen life to the most sublime enlightenment, and topped with 72 Buddha statues arranged around a big stupa-like dome. According to tradition, you should visit these nine levels in a clockwise direction from bottom to top in order to decipher the intricate sculptures. Being the most visited monument of whole of Indonesia, tourists going through their pre-packaged itineraries and students flood in at any time; you have more chances to find a quiet moment if you come and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Get ready to be approached dozens of times by local scholars hunting for foreigners to get a selfie with them; a good test for your patience!
During Buddhist new year, believers from all over the country gather in Borobudur temple to celebrate Waisak celebration. It's not an occasion to be missed since entrance is free and you'll have the unique possibility to admire the wonderfully lighted temple and to assist the religious ceremonials and the customary release of hundreds of Chinese lanterns.
Borobudur temple can easily be reached by public transportation from Jombor bus terminal.
