Borisova Gradina

Boris Garden, named after Bulgarian Tsar Boris III, is one of the oldest parks in Sofia. To start with, Daniel Neff, who was a Swiss gardener, was commissioned to design a park that would do justice to the city of Sofia in 1882. He concentrated on planting trees in the garden but in 1906 Joseph Frei took over the management and introduced a whole lot of flowers in the garden. Georgi Duhtev took this a step further and introduced hundreds of additional varieties of roses, and even created a Japanese Corner, as a sign of friendship between Bulgarian and Japanese people. During the years of communist regime, the park was known as Freedom Park. However, it is back to its original name now.
Today this history is reflected in the layout of Boris Garden. It is perfect for a long walk in the afternoon after a bout of sightseeing in the city. It houses a tennis court, football ground, a Soviet monument and so much more. But we love its tree-lined alleys, perfect for a picnic or two.
